Until the 1680’s, the settlers who had financial ability and knack for business had succeeded to the Gentry.
After the 80’s, the sons of Gentry inherited their parents’ estates and became important government figures.
In order to manage vast plantations which required tremendous workforces, they adopted African slaves as the cheapest labor.
Thus, for economic reasons, the settlers in the South accepted slave trading which Spanish and Portuguese colonies had been conducting since the 1500’s.
Slavery in colonial America began in 1619 with the arrival of 20 African slaves to Jamestown in Virginia.
Not all of the black people in Virginia colony at that time were slaves.
There were free blacks who possessed their own lands and African slaves.
