The History

Tensho 6 (1578) Nobunaga Oda saw Sumo at Azuchi Jo and this is Nobunaga's Sumo Watching Figure

てんしょう6年の（1578）織田信長は相撲を安土城で観覧します。これは信長が相撲を観覧している図です。

As the predecessor of the current Japan Sumo Association, Sumo Kogyo sumo boxing organization is following two Edo in Edo period and Osaka in Osaka.

現在の相撲協会の前任者として、相撲は江戸で行われる江戸興行と大阪で行われる大阪興行がありました。

In here, the writer will explain the history of Edo Sumo.

ここでは、私は江戸相撲の歴史を説明します。

力士は大きな刀と小さな刀を携えています。

In Edo Era

江戸時代

As the sumo organized as a box office was the beggning of Edo period. 

相撲協会は江戸時代に始まります。

This is to gather the money for temple to be built and this is called "Promotion Sumo" in 1624,

in Yotsuya Shiomachi Chozenji or Kasadera, it is firstly performed by 

Akashi Shiganosuke. But winning or losing there is fighting occurs constantly, because of strong connection with the Ronin group.

これはお金をお寺を建立するために集めるためです。これは”プロモーション相撲”と言われ、1624年に開催されました。世塚下町長禅寺若しくは笠寺は明石滋賀の介によって演じられました。しかし勝ち負けに関する戦いが、コンスタントに発生しました。相撲浪人のグループの繋がりによるものです。

From 1648 th a ban was issued by shogunate constantly.

1648年の禁止令が度々出されます。

However Fire resistance in 1657 

しかし耐火運動が1957年に起こります。

最初の切符売り場は前年に焼き払われます。しかしこれは江戸の深川八幡宮の管区で行われました。

興行が開かれると、江戸の町の神社では不規則にそして年間を通して4回1744年から開催されることになりました。

In this time, the meaning of solicitation has faded and sumo wresling is thicken, from 1733 fire works display is held and as edo's heap place, busy as a prime spot,

ryogoku bridges left bank's Main office, the first big tournament was held in 1768.

この時勧誘が色あせて相撲興行が厚みを増すと、1733年には花火大会が行われ、江戸の平和とプライムスポットとして忙しい両国の橋の左岸に本社があり、最初の大きな大会が1768年に開催されることとなりました。

And holding takes root in 1833s.

1833年にルーツがあります。

According to Sumo selection book, in this time there is no ring and the people store called on locker made diamater7-9meters long human circle, and matches are made inside of this.

そして、戦いはこの中で開催されました。

In the mid 17th century, this was taken place in the field like martial arts ring, and later it became square ring surrounded by bales.

17世紀には、これは格闘技の様なリングの上で開催されます。そして俵で囲まれた四角いリングになります。

And next around 1670, 4 gods in 4 corner standing pillars wrapped with cloth, in the four coners four pillars wrapped four-color cloth.

1670年代には、4人の神様が4つ角に布で覆った8つの柱を設置して、

4つの柱には4色の布がまかれました。

丸い土俵が設置されます。

In the begging of 18th century,

18世紀の始まりには、

単純なリングが設置され、外円が取り付けられました。

In the begging of 18th century, halved the bales single ring is installed. 

18世紀の初めには半分の俵に

シングルなリングが備え付けられました。

Attaching an outer circle in this, this became duble ring this is so called "serpent's eye ring".

これに外円が取り付けられ、これがダブルリングすなわち蛇の目のリングとなります。

This one is 16 bales in the inner circle and 20 bales in outer circle so it is called 36th bale.

これは16の俵が円内あります。

そして２０の俵が円外にあります。これは36の俵といわれています。

Besides edo, in this period of time there was a group created in Kyoto and Osaka.

江戸以外にもこの瞬間、京都と大阪でグループが結成されます。

At the begging court authority and large merchant's financial power, Kyoto, with many signboard wrestler's and Osaka sumo grew more than Edo Sumo.

裁判所当局では大商人の財力が京都、そして多くの看板力士のそして大阪の相撲は江戸の相撲より育ちました。

Banzuke which ordered in the box office ordered ranking numbering is ,also, not only board number for posting, beggining wood carving format was began.

番付はランキングを表すもので投稿のボード番号だけでなく、木彫りの形式が始まりました。

The oldest woodblock printing is in Edo that installed 1757, in Kyoto and Osaka much older on is reserved.

最も古い木版印刷は江戸に始まり1757年に備え付けられました。京都と大阪ははるかに古いものです。

But edo sumo starts from 1789 nov. Tsukasa houses from Master Yoshida Tailwind to Tanifu Kajinosuke and Kisaburo Ono Realized Yokozuna licence.

しかし江戸の相撲は1789年の11月から始まり、吉田マスターの追い風である司の家は谷風風の介と小野喜三郎により横綱の免許が実現しました。

Additionally, conquer general watched the match and in 1791th sumo wresling was succeeded.

加えて、観戦した試合と1791年相撲興行は成功をおさめます。

Because the appearance of Raiden Tameemon, from this time on Edo Sumo experienced great excitement.

雷電為衛門の登場によって、この時期から江戸の相撲は大きな興奮を経験します。

Eventually, "a true sumo wrestler who plays the ring in Edo.

やがて、本当の力士だけ江戸のリングに上がれるという事になりました。

This kind of trend was born.

この種のトレンドが生まれます。

It is allowed to each organization's traffic is free, so almost every year, Edo Sumo goes to Edo and Osaka taken place.

お互いの組織の交通は自由となり、したがってほぼ毎年、江戸の相撲は江戸と大阪で開催されます。

The power is there is not much difference between 3 people, this balance became collapsed from the end of Edo period to the Meiji.

3人の力士の間の力関係はそこまで違いませんが、このバランスは江戸時代から明治にかけて崩れる事となりました。
